Action Alert - Thank the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission and other wildlife management decision-makers for taking action on trapping reform

Thank the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission and other wildlife management decision-makers for taking action on trapping reform, by focusing on two proposals:

  • Authorizing the Commission to enact appropriate setbacks for public safety. We are recommending 300' setbacks.

  • Setting mandatory trapper education, including ethics training.

Wyoming Untrapped is working diligently during this legislative session to end animal cruelty. WU joins Wyoming Coalition of Animal Protection (WYCAP) and Jester's Legacy (Afton) on trapping regulation recommendations, in planning stages since February following the horrific death of a beloved pet, Jester, by a brutal 330 Conibear trap. This will involve Commission and Legislative rulemaking.

Nondiscriminate illegal and legal traps and snares are littered across our public landscapes, attracting target and non-target animals with bait. Jester, 100+ reported pets, and thousands of non-target wildlife sniff out these devices, resulting in injuries and death.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission and Department are supporting 1) Mandatory Trapper Education, and 2) Trap Setbacks off numbered public roads and trails, as well as other recommendations ahead for trapping reform.

The Wyoming Legislature can implement solutions to prevent these conflicts on our public lands and improve public safety. Please politely reach out to the following contacts, including your state legislators and your wildlife management office. Thank them for stepping up this year to answer the statewide public call for changes in trapping reform, including mandatory trapping education and trail/road setbacks.
